Jack Mason

Chief Operating Officer

Jack Mason is the Chief Operating Officer of the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He was previously Director Entrepreneurship at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he redesigned and repositioned the entrepreneurship program and curriculum. He has 40+ years of experience, principally in the energy industry. He started 8 businesses as both an entrepreneur and intrapreneur; several led to acquisitions; he raised venture capital for another. He was president of a $50 million public company during a turnaround. He led 24 large company strategic planning and performance improvement engagements as a consultant. He conducted research as a Sloan Fellow into technical professional education in France, Germany, Japan, & US. His current research focuses on entrepreneurship education and its importance to startup success, startup failure, and entrepreneurship in the knowledge economy. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in various formats at UC Boulder and Denver and Duquesne. He earned an ScD in engineering from MIT, an MS in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management, and a BS from the US Naval Academy. He lived in Boulder for 20 years prior to moving to Pittsburgh 6 years ago. He was active in the Pittsburgh and Colorado Front Range startup communities
